The inspiration of Saint Matthew.

Two years ago my good old friend, poet and writer, Reinaldo G. Ramos gave me a book as a present. It was a biography, written in English about the great Italian master Caravaggio by Francine Prose: "Caravaggio: Painter of Miracles". An small format book with a big and original way of getting the juicy new stuff about the artist' life.
Of course; I'm not going to tell...and spoil the potential-reader' excitement.
I saw the painting illustrating this post in this book, then. The main reason I'm talking about this book now, is 'cause it was the first time I saw this art piece in my life. To me it's breathtaking, so strong and so beautiful at the same time. A master piece.

FALSA ALARMA! / Mi primer video
*

Mariel 30 years later / Zu Galeria Fine Arts

A note I found on the Net...a little late but not too late; since the Mariel boatlift was a mass exodus of Cubans who departed from Cuba's Mariel Harbor for the United States between April 15 and October 31, 1980.
Cepp Selgas / Cachita I / Acrylic on paper / 16X12in. / 2005.

Remembering El Mariel 30 years later
A group exhibit, featuring artists, who came via El Mariel boatlift 30 years ago. Some were children then, others adults, but all have one thing in common, besides being artists … all are Marielitos…
Abdiel Acosta; Carlos Alfonso; Valentin Alvarez-Campos ; Ayessa; Florencio Capestany; Ana Carballosa; Mario Castañeda; Carlos Diaz Barrios; Pedro Damian; Humberto Dionisio; Casimiro Gonzalez; Victor Gomez; Pablo Hernandez; Eduardo Michaelsen; Luis Molina; Jose Ramon Morales; Mysora; Juan Navarrete; Tony Nuñez; Miguel Ordoqui; Luis Pardini; Trinidad Pino; Juan Lara; Carlos Rafael; Manuel Revuelta; Jesus Redruello; Cepp Selgas; Andres Valerio; Luis Vega; Sinuhé Vega; Luis Venegas.
I bid farewell to the sea… May it never happen again, for many lives were lost out there in the ocean… To those that are no longer with us, I dedicate this exhibit in your memory… 30 years later!

Ajiaco / Hillard Museum of Art

Hillard Museum of Art / Lafayette / Louisiana.
Curated by Gail Gelburd, Ph. D., "Ajiaco" is a group show of "In and Out" Cuban artists that originally had its debut on September 2009 at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum of New London CT.
My "Los hijos de Obbatalá" (2002) and "Los Lazos Familiares" (1995) are part of this big show that will travel to several museums in the near future.
*
Cepp Selgas / Los hijos de Obbatalá / Acrylic and oil on canvas / 60X48in. / 1992-08.

Just recently "Ajiaco" is making its second appearance. This time, at the Hillard Museum in Lafayette, Louisiana, from July 2 to December 18, 2010.
AJIACO: Stirrings of the Cuban Soul is focused on that which serves as a source for all of Latin American art – its spirituality. It engages the visitor as they view, participate in, watch and listen to the roots of Cuban culture from its sources in Africa, Asia, Spain, China, and indigenous culture. Cuban art today embraces and visualizes the very nature of the Cuban soul. This is the subject of Ajiaco. The art combines the tales of the Orishas of Africa with Chinese calligraphy, the environment and feminist issues. The formats change, the materials vary, but the element that remains constant between the Cuban and Cuban-American artists is a commitment to the visualization of the syncretistic mix that is Cuban culture.
Hillard Museum
The museum’s collection consists of 18th through 21st century European, Asian and American art works. Selections from the permanent collection are on view on a rotating basis. In addition to the permanent collection, the 11,000 sq. ft. of gallery space features changing exhibitions of regional, national and international art.
Museum Hours
9 - 5 Tuesday through Thursday. 9 to noon on Friday, 9 - 5 Saturday. Closed on Sunday, Monday, and all major holidays.

Hablando Bloguerias No.43
