We are thrilled to announce the selected artists and works for Garrison Art Center's first juried show of kinetic and optical art - ArtQUAKE! Also featured in our galleries will be a selection of works by young artists and works by invited artists.

SUMMER ARTS ON THE HUDSON FOR 2021

 

We are excited to announce the return of an in-person summer program for 2021, with expanded options available for your family.

 

Now you can choose between enrolling in two or four weeks of our highly acclaimed program. Safety is important to us, so we will follow all Covid guidelines and will be limiting group sizes.

 

Registration opens today as a benefit to GAC Members at the Family Level or above. Those members will receive an email with their special registation link. New Members at this level will also be sent the link.

 

General registration opens up March 16.

We missed having your kids here last summer and cannot wait to welcome them back this year!

Let's Get Elemental!

SITE is a school-based educational program that invites local school art teachers to engage their students in a theme-based project to be exhibited at Garrison Art Center. This year's theme is Let's Get Elemental! exploring the seven basic elements of art. It is truly a testament to the resourcefulness and drive of our local teachers that this program has been able to successfully continue this year, even with all the challenges teaching during a pandemic brings.

Galleries open Tuesday-Sunday, 10-5 pm. To keep everyone safe, there will be no opening reception and we will be following NYS Covid protocols.

 We are so grateful to have been able to make these programs happen despite the challenges we are all facing right now. It has been a pleasure seeing both of these programs come together this year. We hope you will visit our galleries to see these special exhibitions for yourself. 

Our Mentor Program provides the opportunity for young students to work closely with a professional artist. The Mentor Show is the culmination and celebration of that program. We are so impressed with these motivated young artists and thankful to our mentors for volunteering their time.

How wonderful it has been to see our many artist members (albeit only the top third of their faces) and their exceptional works coming through the door this week for submission into the 2021 Member Exhibition, opening this Friday, January 8.

 

To keep everyone safe, there will be no opening reception, but we are extending opening day hours to 7:00pm on Friday. The Member Exhibition will continue through January 17 during regular gallery hours, Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00am – 5:00pm.

After careful consideration and in light of the most recent recommendations coming from CDC, county, state and federal entities, we have decided to temporarily close Garrison Art Center. In the best interest of our members, our staff, and our visitors, we will remain closed until we are advised it is once again safe to be open.

The solo exhibitions of Caroline Burton and Eric Erickson have been cancelled to be rescheduled during our 2021 season.

We will keep you posted on new developments and look forward to the day we are back up and running in full capacity.

We know how important art is to all of us right now. It is also important to support our talented local artists. One great way to bring art into your home right now is to visit our Artist Members' Gallery. You might discover a new artist and decide to support that artist with a commission or purchase! (Social distance hand-off or a sanitized shipment?) Perhaps a favorite artist will submit work to our Riverside Art Auction!

Speaking of the Riverside Art Auction: At this point, the auction remains scheduled for Saturday, May 9. Artists will receive information regarding participation in the next couple days. We realize there is a STRONG possibility the auction will need to be postponed or made virtual, but at this point we will forge ahead, all the while being ready to adjust as we get further down this unpredictable road.

In the meantime, we hope you will follow our Instagram and Facebook pages as we hope to inspire or brighten your days with virtual content such as "Teacher Features", "Member Mondays" and "Throwback Thursday" images from past exhibitions, classes and events. We might even be so lucky to have a few of our teachers offer a video technique tip or two to share!

We have altered our recommended hashtag for postings of the art you and your family create at home during this time to #GAC_QuarantineArt. This will give us our very own page of GAC Member/follower art! We can't wait to see what you create - the good, the bad, the silly, the poignant! 

We encourage you to keep local nonprofits in your thoughts during this time as suspended programming will most likely have a negative economic impact. Click the yellow button on any page of our website to donate.

One last thought: We de-installed the colorful, joyous, energetic, School Invitational Theme Exhibition on Monday as our last task before closing. Pictured above are details of some of the wonderful work from that show.

Our galleries are currently empty - back to bare white. This could feel a little sad.

We will look instead, for the next couple of months, to the wisdom expressed in the final line in the musical based on the life and art of George Seurat, Sunday in the Park with George:

"White. A blank page or canvas. His favorite. So many possibilities."

Exceptional and exciting artwork has been coming through our doors. 

Just as important as our artist members, however, are the community members who also support and sustain Garrison Art Center through membership at all levels.

What started as a grass roots effort in 1964 by a group of local arts enthusiasts is now a center bustling on three levels, open seven days a week, with two professional galleries, four studio spaces and administrative offices. Drift by Matt Frieburghaus

Divergent Boundaries is a multi-media exhibition that transforms Garrison Art Center’s Gillette Gallery into a vibrant space of sight and sound. Frieburghaus deftly combines audio recordings, single channel video, objects generated by 3-D printers and dramatic Icelandic projections; all exploring landscapes of ice, water, land, and sky as a response to sensory experiences. Specifically, this body of work focuses on the light, land, and sounds recorded during three trips that Frieburghaus made to Iceland between 2014 and 2018 and reflects his continued interest in Icelandic sub and low-Arctic landscapes. His interest in defining place is accomplished through the overlap of the various media creating a kind of “collage/montage” of imagery that expresses the uniqueness and rapidly changing glacial landscape of Iceland today. The work  captures both the visual and sensory magic of this space and

Untitled by Doug Navarra

Presence 2.0 is an exhibition of mixed media works combining gouache, pencil, and ink onto vintage papers that Navarra finds and uses as a substrate and starting point for his work. The paintings are intimate and detailed filled with images of a bygone era that interact with marks, colors and shapes introduced by Navarra as a kind of call and response creating an interactive dialogue. Through the use of various mediums and his rich vocabulary of mark making, Navarra reconstructs these old documents to reflect his own intentions and narrative. He is inspired by the potential found in objects from the past and in retrieving a piece of history and reconfiguring it. Navarra playfully explores color, shape, and pattern as he weaves in and out of the existing compositions to transform ideas from the past into relevant concerns of today. Press Release
