Hablando Bloguerias No.36

Cepp Selgas / Our Lady of Charity with Many Angels / Oil and acrylic on paper / 36X36in. / 1994.

Creo.

Cepp Selgas / 1-2-3-4 (comiendo mierda y rompiendo zapato)-6-9 / Acrylic on paper / 18x24in. / 2006.

"Recuerdo" = a-más-que-"cuerdo”.

Carmen Herrera: The "IT" Girl of the Art World!

Last week Gustavo Valdés and I went to visit "Carmen Herrera-Recent Works" at Frederico Seve Gallery at 37 W. 57th St., in the distinguished gallery district of New York. We were not really prepared for the breathtaking impact that caused in us the overpowering installation of Herrera’s new masterpieces.
This exhibition definitely shows the "It" Girl of the Art World-today at her very best.

Back in 1980 Ernesto Briel and I, were lucky enough to be introduced to the art of Carmen Herrera by Florencio García Cisneros, a man who deeply appreciated her art as well. Later on we had the privilege of meeting Carmen when Gustavo Valdés curated a show of recent works by Carmen Herrera and Ernesto Briel. The show titled "Duo Geo" was presented in the Fall of 1992 at Jadite Galleries, New York.
Chance had me accompanying scholar and author Diana Alvarez to her interview with Carmen which appeared earlier this year in Linden Line Magazine whose later issue was dedicated to the great Cuban abstractionist. And I was thrilled to be the one taking pictures of the unforgettable event.

One of my pictures at Carmen Herrera' studio with Diana at the Window.

In my recent post about Ernesto Briel's Tribute in commemoration of Mariel’s 25th Anniversary I referred to a few artists who were followers of Kazimir Malevich in the years and decades after the Russian master made his art. Some other “few” artists have followed up to now the same line of work and have remained strictly faithful to geometry in art.
In general, the making of visual art is a solitary act. In the art-making-world, a geometric artist is a true solitaire.
They are always labeled as moderns. But are they abstractionists or representational artists?

Circles, squares, stripes, dots, triangles, etc. are very recognizable shapes. When representing art, what do they mean?
All the elements of what we see as abstract art today were always incredibly present throughout the whole "classic" history of art. That was the most brilliant message I found when reading –as a young man- José Ortega y Gasset's "La deshumanización del arte." These elements are: shape, background, composition, balance, color, harmony, texture, treatment of surface, strokes, visible and unperceivable strokes. Ortega y Gasset sees all these elements as a "glass window" through which we are able to see any "specific theme" in a style chosen by the artist: portrait, landscape, still-life, etc. Ortega y Gasset goes further to explains that, what the "modern artist" does is precisely work with the "glass itself" with the main purpose of finishing the artwork while ignoring the traditional "theme" as an exclusive goal.
Even though the figurative aspect of "classic" art was still present in many of the modern artistic productions of the avant-guard movement, the latter has been under the furious attack of overdoses of self expression. Hence, it’s safe to asseverate that not everything modern was abstract, and neither was Geometric Art.

Ernesto Briel / Tribute: Mariel 25

The Miami Dade College, Walfson Campus, Department of Arts and Philosophy in 2005 presented a major retrospective art show of the late, great Cuban artist Ernesto Briel.
With the contribution of a very capable curatorial-work from Gustavo Valdés, the skilled staff under Jorge Gutiérrez, AGS' executive direction, and the collaboration from several collectors; this show was an absolute hit.
Among all Cuban artists arriving to USA in 1980 by the Mariel boat-event, Ernesto Briel was a truly well established artist, even with some of his art-work hanging on the Bellas Artes Museum of Havana' permanent collection.
Living and working for 22 years of my life next to the energy that he once was, certainly made a completion of what my understanding of art in general, is today.
How come a figurative artist-kind of story teller-like my self, can be related to an strictly geometric artist like Briel? It is very simple: The power of modern art is in its basics.
*

When Pablo Piasso gave us "his" Cubism in the early years of our XX century. He was proposing us an envisioning of art, in a different way of what we were accustomed.
Two decades before his "Mademoiselle d'Avignon" in 1886; photography came about with the irrefutable "prototype" of what we all were capable "to see-more or less".
Also the 24 by seconds "fragments of time" brought by the cinema, was a 'copy-cat" of what (we) artists were doing for centuries: "Frozen moments of time".
*

What makes Picasso so great was the ability of synthesizing and idea he digested from Paul Cezanne.
As per Picasso every subject in reality can be brought to it's geometric basic shape, and also the angle from where this subject is observed can be altered.
This was a great open window to the future of understanding art far beyond its figurative meaning.
Artist as Kazimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian and few other were the pioneers creators of what we know as Geometric Art today.

First Day of Freedom / Revisited

All my pictures taken in Cuba were in black and white (you figure it out). And from this time on, they are going to be in color. So "I'm not in Kansas anymore"...not exactly "but-not" in Arkansas anymore...that's for sure!
I was sent to Fort Chaffee since May 18 of 1980, next day of my arrival to USA. Yes, I was there when "the fires" and the KKK rally, and everything in between, but those were the least of my life memories events occupying my mind that morning when this picture was taken. June 2nd of 1980 was the day I visited New York for the first time. And here I'm...still loving it.

My 2010 Zoe' Calendar / June - Juin

Cepp Selgas / Ophelia / Acrylic on canvas / 20X40in. / 2008.

Obviously the silhouette of a tragic Shakespearean Ophelia, is the Cuban island.
On this painting not only Ophelia is Cuba. The wrapping drape around the corpse is composed obsessively by many little Yin&Yang-like Cubas. Also the painted frame.
Combining my M.C. Escher' influence, with the purpose of producing a piece where beauty and tragedy can meet in a harmonic way, was my goal. Some like in the corpus of work of my very admired Gustav Klimt.
You see; a little of Escher, Klimt, maybe a little of Alma Tadema...and a lot of myself. Just in case you wanted to know.
