MEMBER EXHIBITION! Garrison Art Center invites our members to participate in the 2022 Member Exhibition, January 14-23, 2022.   Current Garrison Art Center members may submit one work of any medium, no larger than 36 inches on the longest side. 2D work must be framed or ready to hang. Please let us know as soon as possible if you will require a pedestal or have any special instructions for displaying your work.     Work may be delivered beginning Saturday, Jan. 8 through Tuesday Jan. 11, between 10am and 5pm, along with a completed Exhibition Registration/Agreement form. You may complete the online form HERE or fill out a printed form at the Art Center when you drop off your work.   All work must arrive no later than Tuesday, January 11th by 5pm to be included in the show.   Join or renew your membership for 2022. Not sure if you already renewed? 2022 members are listed on our website. Renew your membership HERE.

We are thrilled to welcome community members and fine arts and craft lovers back to
Garrison Art Center's 51st annual Riverside Crafts Fair.

This is one of our largest annual fundraisers. Funds from the gate help keep our educational programs and exhibitons running, and our staff and building humming!  

This year, purchase your tickets ahead of time for speedy gate entry.  

 

Tickets will be sold in three-hour time slots, as our goal is to keep fair attendance balanced throughout the day to maximize safety for attendees, artists, and staff. If you cannot attend at your scheduled time, feel free to come at another time or the other day. Tickets can also be purchased at the gate. We welcome back our long-participating artists and are also excited to welcome many new artists & craftspersons along with specialty food and beverage makers. Your purchases support these talented artists, which will be much appreciated after what was a challenging year for so many of them.   Click on the poster above to get a sneak preview of some the artists' wares and to purchase tickets! Also follow #riversidecraftsfair for more images and updates.   Garrison Art Center's Riverside Crafts Fair is one of the most well established high-quality crafts fairs in the region. Set on the edge of the Hudson River just an hour north of New York City in Garrison, New York. With majestic river views, the fair offers a truly exquisite spot to shop and is a premier event in the Hudson Valley for collectors of hand-made traditional and alternative craft. An intimate fair, this year featuring 50+ juried artists participate with furniture, photography, jewelry, gourmet food, glass items, textiles, fine art, ceramics, wooden utensils, tableware, and more. Visitors can take the train to the fair which is steps from the MTA Metro North Hudson Line. Free parking at the Metro North train station, plus a free shuttle service makes this a popular event for those who live near the river towns from NYC to Poughkeepsie.

The Riverside Galleries at Garrison Art Center willl also be open during the fair both Saturday and Sunday 10am to 5pm. Featured will be a solo show by mixed media artist Steve Rossi and a group show compiled of eight female artists curated by The Rule of Three. selgasArt / Garrison Art Center / Clay by Deb Lecce: "Two Brothers" Wood Fired Stoneware

 

Guardians of the Land,  a solo exhibition of ceramic sculptures by Deb Lecce. This is Ms. Lecce’s first solo exhibition in the Riverside Galleries at Garrison Art Center. The exhibition has been on view in the Balter Gallery since May 22 – June 20, 2021.

 

Deb Lecce is well known to the Hudson Valley and Garrison Art Center as a gifted ceramics artist and instructor, inspiring students and collectors with her skills and finely crafted ceramic works. Guardians of the Land is an exclusive collection of Lecce’s elegant ceramic animals that she hand builds with stoneware clay and fires in a variety of kilns, each producing a unique surface.

Lecce begins each sculpture with the belly of the animal adding coil upon coil of clay while paddling and stretching the clay to find the gesture and spirit of each individual work. Lecce talks about a contemplative mindset during the process of creating and the excitement and challenge that accompanies the transformation of the clay into “sentient” beings. One is struck by the varied earthen colors and patinas of each sculpture. Surfaces resemble stone with sumptuous gradations of rust to burnt umber or semi-gloss slate tones that are warm and inviting. Lecce’s favorite mode of firing is in the anagama wood firing kiln. The anagama kiln (a Japanese term meaning “cave kiln”) is thirty feet long, four feet high and four feet wide. The firing chamber has a firebox at one end and a flue at the other so that the heat and ash pass over the clay pieces before exiting through the flue creating patinas that Lecce refers to as “a kiss of fire and ash.” The firing takes place over seven days with a team of artists coming together and working towards a common goal: to facilitate and witness the magic that transforms their dried clay pieces into fine and durable ceramics. It is an annual event that Lecce looks forward to each year.

 OPENING (this) FRIDAY: WE TOOK THE SHOW ON THE ROAD! The impressive works from our talented high school students who participated in the 2021 Mentor Program will be on display at Mahopac Library April 2-26. This beautiful library sits on Lake Mahopac, and its large windows facing the lake, along with the 3rd floor exhibition make a visit worthwhile. Thank you Education Coordinator Kit Burke-Smith and all the artists and parents for transporting the work across county! This is a great opportunity to share this art and the work of Garrison Art Center with our neighbours to the east.

We are excited to announce the return of an in-person summer program for 2021, with expanded options available for your family.

 

Now you can choose between enrolling in two or four weeks of our highly acclaimed program. Safety is important to us, so we will follow all Covid guidelines and will be limiting group sizes.

 

Registration opens today as a benefit to GAC Members at the Family Level or above. Those members will receive an email with their special registation link. New Members at this level will also be sent the link.

 

General registration opens up March 16.

We missed having your kids here last summer and cannot wait to welcome them back this year!

Our Mentor Program provides the opportunity for young students to work closely with a professional artist. The Mentor Show is the culmination and celebration of that program. We are so impressed with these motivated young artists and thankful to our mentors for volunteering their time.

How wonderful it has been to see our many artist members (albeit only the top third of their faces) and their exceptional works coming through the door this week for submission into the 2021 Member Exhibition, opening this Friday, January 8.

 

To keep everyone safe, there will be no opening reception, but we are extending opening day hours to 7:00pm on Friday. The Member Exhibition will continue through January 17 during regular gallery hours, Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00am – 5:00pm.

smallWORKS 2020, is a national juried biennial exhibition presenting seventy works selected from over five hundred entries. Works were not to exceed 12” in any direction. As always, the jury process was a challenge due to the high caliber of work received. This year’s esteemed juror was Paulien Lethen, a Dutch artist and gallery owner. Lethen opened Holland Tunnel Art Newburgh/Gallery and Studios in May of 2018 shortly after she became a resident of Newburgh, NY. Recognizing a lively local art community, she sets out to create a new place for exhibitions, performances, concerts, movie screenings and art studios. Our gratitude to Paulien Lethen for her careful selection of works which will create a dynamic and diverse exhibition. We miss you all down by the river! As we all face the challenges of this unique time, Garrison Art Center wants to offer you the chance to connect and foster creativity from the comfort and safety of your own home. Be inspired by Spring as we create mini colorful floral collages. Throughout the workshop we will be drawing, painting, and exploring the ease and beauty of paper collage. If you have never painted before, this is a great way to start. Experienced painters will find this a refreshing way to re-energize their art practice.  $30 (+optional $20 art kit)

What’s the difference between selfies and self-portraits? Turning the camera on yourself can be a very powerful, even frightening, thing. Discuss the many factors that go into a self-portraiture practice, from the emotions to the logistics, to the technical aspects of working with your camera remotely. Look at self portraits by other photographers and discuss how to create images of yourself that are meaningful and honest, as well as technically sound. $30

Engage in a bit of wordplay. A few trips or deliveries from the supermarket will provide you with a diverse collection of fonts in different styles, sizes and colors from product packaging and bags.This is perfect fodder for graffiti and letter inspired art. We’ll create puns, superlatives, and proverbs we’d like to immortalize forever. It is plastic after all, so it’ll last! Add a bit of hand stitching and end up with a fun and striking new piece of art. $30

In this workshop, Emily will show you how to transfer an image to linoleum and create a relief carving to print from. She will cover different techniques to create areas of varying light and dark, depth and dimension, and how to distinguish which tools are best to achieve various textures. She will then demonstrate how to print your lino-cut from home using a wooden spoon and water based ink.
$30 (+ optional $5 loaner printmaking kit)
