Artist: Gladys Triana-Meditation/Space
ShareThis
Category: Art
Location: Curtis Gallery, New Canaan, CT
Date:
02/24/2013 -Reception at 3:00pm - 5pm
“Meditation/Space” features selections from Triana’s numerous photographic series and her video work.Light is extremely important in her photography. Triana credits the works of Renaissance artists, especially Rembrandt and Caravaggio, as inspiration for the notable variations of intensity in the background or her works, instead of the object.
After more than 40 years of working primarily in painting and sculpture, Triana debuted her first photographic series in 2002. Titled Every Time Is Now, the series features composite images of the artist’s hands, along with somewhat abstract street scenes of New York City.
Also on exhibition will be Stillness, another photographic series in which objects force themselves upon the viewer as absolute protagonists, and The Observer series, as well as other series with fewer photographs in the same medium.
Gladys Triana was born in Camagüey, Cuba, and has been a resident of New York City since 1975. She completed her BA at Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, New York; her MA at Long Island University, New York. She studied print making at the San Fernando University in Madrid, Spain.
Triana’s artwork includes prints, drawings, collages, works on canvas, photography, and installations, which have been presented in numerous solo exhibitions around the US and internationally. Triana's work is represented in Museums such as The Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York, El Museo de Arte Moderno, Santo Domingo, El Museo de Bellas Artes, Santiago de Chile, Chile, El Museo de la Ciudad, Queretaro, Mexico, Housatonic Museum, Connecticut, The Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Frost Art Museum, Miami, Florida, Art Museum of Fine Art at Arizona State University, Arizona among other.
“Meditation/Space” is sponsored by the Art Committee, Friends of New Canaan Library. The curators for this show are Micaela Porta and Susie Salomo

Gadys Triana / An Invitation

The Observer / America’s Society / May 26 at 6:00 PM.

A groundbreaking art video by painter, sculptor and photographer Gladys Triana, seeking to go beyond the aesthetic quality of the image to explore the fantasy of the unknown and the circle of existential meaning. With hauntingly abstract music and intervals of silence, and a striking interplay of light and movement, adding the words of a poem by Maya Islas, the video poignantly evokes the passage of time and the events that interrupt and punctuate human life.

Followed by a Q & A with the artist and special commentary by curator Alejandro Anreus and Francisco Soto moderador.
