The Chill Concept presents Mazes of the Image and the Word: an exhibition of ten drawings from a series created by artist Gladys Triana (Camagüey, Cuba; 1937) which provided inspiration to writer Reinaldo Arenas (Holguin, Cuba; 1943 – USA 1990) for the accompanying texts.

A principios de la década de 1970, un pequeño grupo de amigos se reunía en el Parque Lenin, en la afueras de La Habana, para leer sustrabajos e intercambiar libros. Los domingos, temprano, se citaban en el Paradero de la Víbora –en la primera parada de la ruta 88–, para partir juntos hacia el Parque. Poco a poco iban llegando los lectores subversivos, casi siempre el último en arribar era Reinaldo Arenas. El pelo encaracolado, flaco, con ese caminar bamboleante de guajiro cerrero, medio pomo deperfume arriba y una mochila de careta antigás, teñida de amarillo, cargada de libros y manuscritos...

Mariel, Revista de Literatura y Arte was published quarterly in Spanish in New York City between April 1983 and April 1985 by a group of young Cuban writers and artists who had arrived in the United States in 1980 during the Mariel boatlift, an exodus of refugees from the port of Mariel in Cuba.  In editing Mariel, this group wanted to showcase their own work and the work of other Cubans who had taken part in the exodus, as well as the literary and artistic achievements of other authors from Cuba, both from the 1980s and from earlier decades of the twentieth century.  Other well-known Latin American authors were also included in the pages ofMariel.
A total of eight issues were published. They were printed in tabloid format on newsprint, the only paper they could afford. Surviving copies are fragile, hard to find and risk being damaged when physically handled. That is why this website has been created, both to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the release of Mariel’s first issue and to give readers access to digital copies of the full eight issues in PDF format.

Before Night Falls / Reinaldo Arenas

For famous Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas, his 'fiction' character Clara Mortera was his 'evil' alter ego.
In real life Clara Mortera is the magnificent Cuban painter: Clara Morera.
By the 70's decade Reinaldo was my next block neighbor in Havana.  My neighbor across the street in Manhattan by the 80's.
Just by chance I was involved in making possible the historic meeting with Clara and renowned American artist-and-filmmaker Julian Schnabel at Gustavo Valdés NJ'ARS Atelier Galleries, when "Before Night Falls" (the movie) was about to hit production. "Before Night Falls" was Reinaldo's autobiographical novel, later becoming a movie and also an opera.
And just by chance again (at a recent party) I had the pleasure of meeting Cuban-born composer Jorge Martin, the musician and author of the beautiful and successful opera, based on "Before Night Falls".

Reinaldo Arenas committed suicide on December 7, 1990. A day like today, twenty two years ago.

The Importance of Being Ernesto Briel

Ernesto y yo, fuimos los 'Brielgas’ para el gran Reinaldo Arenas allá en La Habana de la década del 70. Y 'Jesús-Briel' en cualquiera otra grotesca ocurrencia literaria de su famosa obra de los 80 acá en Nueva York. Veintidós años de ese ‘dos en uno’ después de veinte sin Ernesto Briel son casi medio siglo de importancia.

Briel: un vanguardista del PopArt en Cuba, y primer actor del más destacado teatro vanguardista de su época, con una gran obra en su haber para la historia cultural cubana. Un gran artista universal.

Este video, "The Importance of Being Ernesto Briel" fue uno de mis primeros (y únicos) ejercicios en uno de mis escasos intentos dentro del ‘Séptimo Arte’, abandonado por el momento.

This image is from the original artwork of a Christmas postcard. It's got on its back the "Brielgas" logo designed by Ernesto Briel. Brielgas was the playful way Reinaldo Arenas use to call us, combining both our last names. This postcard came about in those early years when Madonna (the singer), was rising and rising to heaven above until the end of time. And of course, I did what any other-red blooded-Jesus would do on such an occasion, because at the end...we are still only human.
