Cepp Selgas / Tresjuanes XI / oil on canvas / 80s
Mariel, Revista de Literatura y Arte was published quarterly in Spanish in New York City between April 1983 and April 1985 by a group of young Cuban writers and artists who had arrived in the United States in 1980 during the Mariel boatlift, an exodus of refugees from the port of Mariel in Cuba. In editing Mariel, this group wanted to showcase their own work and the work of other Cubans who had taken part in the exodus, as well as the literary and artistic achievements of other authors from Cuba, both from the 1980s and from earlier decades of the twentieth century. Other well-known Latin American authors were also included in the pages ofMariel. A total of eight issues were published. They were printed in tabloid format on newsprint, the only paper they could afford. Surviving copies are fragile, hard to find and risk being damaged when physically handled. That is why this website has been created, both to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the release of Mariel’s first issue and to give readers access to digital copies of the full eight issues in PDF format.
