selgasArt / Tapestry-Some (1)

selgasArt / Tapestry (7)

Between 1980-82, I made two tapestries meanwhile working on a series of small size gouache on papers, also Drawings, and few oil on canvas. In 1982 those tapestries (my very last) were exhibit in the "Three Cuban Painters" (Ernesto Briel, José Camejo and I), becoming my first Art show participation in USA at Middlesex County College, New Jersey.

selgasArt / Tapestry (6)

"El paisaje" (tapestry) is one of my last pieces done in Habana-1977, shortly after a group of my creations were awarded a first Prize by the 'Museo de Artes Decorativas' early same year; and in 1978 made its way to USA among several gouache on paper works, dated early 70s; brought to New York thanks to an advise coming from a family member visiting Cuba under 'La Comunidad Cubana' program: first time (since 1959) 'communist Cuba' allowing 'nationals'  exiled to visit their own country. At the end, the idea of having some of my art in USA did work perfectly in my favor since 'The Mariel Boatlift' event back in 1980.

selgasArt / Tapestry (4)

The launching of 1980-May issue of 'CUBA International Magazine' featuring three of my tapestries in the  "Art and Craft/Four Creators" show, at Havana Univercity's Gallery, was happening at the same time as my escape from 'Red Paradice' toward USA. Some years after I did manage to get a copy.

Garrison Art Center / ITERATIONS and SEWAN

Garrison Art Center is proud to present the first solo exhibitions of the year.
Save the Date for Sharon Lindenfeld's printmaking exhibition: ITERATIONS, and SEWAN: paintings and works on paper by Tad Wiley

January 26 - February 24

Opening reception for both shows is Saturday, January 26, 5-7pm
Contemporary printmaker Sharon Lindenfeld’s abstract etchings and collagraphs revel in the subtle and expressive frequencies of the subconscious. Ambiguous, dreamlike landscapes are peopled with strange figures, objects, and architectural elements.
The exhibition will feature both large scale and small scale prints. Pushing past the traditional limits, Reverie is a series of four by five foot etchings, all printed from the same two plates, but printed in different combinations of colors, layering, and transparencies. Born of the same source material, they move in and out in reference to each other. Working this way, Lindenfeld takes advantage of the repetitive nature of the medium while transforming it into her own expression.

Tad Wiley's exhibition title references a word that is associated with the indigenous peoples of the East coast. It refers to the beads fashioned from whelks and quahogs that were gathered along the shore primarily as food.
SEWAN is a body of work that encompasses over 125 paintings and works on paper created within a two year period from 2011 to 2012. In this exhibition, a selection of smaller works on vellum and wood panel are grouped together with larger wood panel paintings. Wiley's use of enamel and alkyd, both oil based paints, gives the work a distinctive satin texture, and evidence of his reworking is revealed on the diaphanous surfaces.
Wiley's approach to reductive abstraction is a meditation on environment. "My painting has always come out of my relationship and direct contact with Nature. I include all ‘man made’ things as part of this ‘nature’ as well as land, water, sky, etc."

Both exhibitions will be on view from January 26 through February 24, 2019.
