The Unicorn Tapestries at The Cloisters Revisited / My Own French Connection

Detail/The Unicorn in Captivity/The Cloisters/The Metropolitan Museum of Art/NY.

Back in New York City I’ve just spent a very pleasant afternoon visiting the Cloisters with my dear friend Diana.
There among the seven individual hangings known collectively as the Unicorn Tapestries the Unicorn in Captivity stands out as the most adorable. It is related curiously to the famous French group at the Cluny Museum in Paris mainly because it represents many plants such as wild orchid, bistort, and thistle floating on a flat green background. As in the Lady with the Unicorn in Paris in its depiction there are echoes also of the themes of marriage and procreation.
